Job SummaryWe are looking for an experienced and extremely hard working person who enjoys coffee, creating and serving good food, small business, non-profit enterprise, and helping build a community space that seeks to make a difference.
The candidate will report to the Café Supervisor and Charity Manager and be responsible for assisting in the successful day-to-day running of the café and the wide range of community events, meetings and groups that it is host to. The candidate must be flexible, able and willing to work weekday, evening and weekend shifts.
Duties and responsibilities
- Cooking and preparing food and drink
- Delivering excellent customer service
- Occassionally assist with making buffets for up to 100 people
- Assist in the catering, planning and other operational practices for events
- Opening and closing the café according to agreed procedures
- Operating the till & cashing up
- Clearing tables & operating the dishwasher
- Cleaning and general housekeeping
- Attending fortnightly staff meetings and monthly training sessions
- Working daytime shifts, evenings and weekends as and when required
- Looking after the Nexus garden and plantlife
- Assisting in care and presentation of the exhibitions and art displays
- Adhering to recycling procedures and contributing to sustainability efforts
- Talking to and befriending all of our users- making everyone feel welcome and happy
- Working co-operatively with and supporting all staff members and volunteers
- Working within safeguarding procedures

- Ensuring that the space is set up and ready for events, fully closed down at the end of the event and ready for café next day
Person specification
- Experience of working in a busy food and drink service environment
- Experience of food preparation and coffee making to a high standard preferable
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Extremely positive, ‘can do’, DIY attitude- bags of enthusiasm!
- A creative person with lots of ideas to bring to our ever developing project
- Confident in working with and supporting volunteers and employees from a variety of social backgrounds and abilities
- Hands on and flexible approach to all aspects of work with good attention to detail
- Enjoy working in a highly creative, sometimes hectic environment
- In sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Methodist Church
Terms of employment
- £6.50 p/h
- Circa 8 – 16 (tbc) hrs per week (additional overtime available each month)
- 4 weeks holiday upon completion of probation period (8 weeks)
- Fixed term contract (6months) to be reviewed thereafter
